The link between roof and controller
In a stand-alone solar system, the charge controller manages the energy the panel sends to the battery. For this job to go well, you need a cable that connects the two cleanly. This Wattstunde model measures 5 m and is intended for exactly that stretch: from the panel, mounted high, down to the controller installed under cover.
Designed for small installations
Five metres are generally enough for a fitted-out van, a garden cabin, a modest sailing boat or a caravan. For a home user, it is the cable pulled between the module and the technical box. A professional, such as a vehicle converter, can use it to equip several vehicles uniformly with a part of known length.
Measure before you buy
- The real route of the cable, including bends and bulkhead passages.
- The controller position relative to the battery.
- The spare length needed so the connectors are not pulled.
Construction
The data indicate a conductor cross-section of 6mm², a length of 5 m and a plastic material. No detail is given about maximum voltage, connector type or resistance to ultraviolet light. Check in the manual that the ends match the output of your panel and the input of your controller.
What the 6mm² cross-section brings
The thicker a conductor, the less resistance it opposes to current. A 6mm² cross-section over 5 m therefore limits the heat produced in the cable and the energy lost on the way, compared with a thinner wire of the same length. It is a reassuring choice for a medium-sized panel, though it does not remove the need to check the current of your own installation.
Laying it
Choose a protected route: corrugated conduit, waterproof cable gland, spaced clips. Avoid sharp edges and zones where the cable could be crushed by a hatch or a door. Always connect the controller to the battery before plugging in the panel, if its manual calls for that sequence, and respect polarity. The final sizing of the whole system is up to the installer or the controller documentation.

Safety
Cover the panel before handling any connection, since it delivers current as soon as it is lit. Never swap positive and negative. If the cable runs near a heat source, a motor or a metal edge, protect it; a damaged sheath can cause a short circuit. Do not exceed the limits stated for the panel and the controller.
Care and storage
Once per season, inspect the route: loose clips, marked sheath, moisture at the connectors. Dust it off and rinse with clear water if needed, then dry. When not installed, keep the cable in wide loops in a dry place.
