A temporary connection to a battery
These clamps let you draw current from, or feed current into, a battery without removing lugs or tightening anything: you close them on the terminals and the link is made. The 1.5 m cable, from Wattstunde, joins them to the device you want to power or to the one that will recharge the battery.
Where they fit in
In a garage, they are used to connect a maintenance charger to the battery of a car, a motorbike or a ride-on mower. On a boat or in a motorhome, they help out when a socket stops working. A mechanic or a maintenance electrician will keep them in the call-out case, for quick tests on the bench or on a site.
Examples of use
- Connecting a compatible charger or converter to a service battery.
- Temporarily powering a small low-voltage device.
- Taking a measurement or running a test on an exposed battery.
What is known about the build
The data state a conductor cross-section of 6mm² and a length of 1.5 m. They say nothing about maximum current, the presence or rating of a fuse, or the material of the jaws. Before connecting a demanding device, read the manual: it states the protection provided and the current not to be exceeded.
Strong points
At 6mm², the conductor is thicker than that of the thinnest auxiliary cables, which reduces heating for a given current. The 1.5 m length leaves useful reach: the charger can sit on a workbench while the battery stays in its compartment. The clamp principle needs no tools, which makes the set quick to deploy and just as quick to remove once the job is done.
Setting up
Stop the device and switch off the vehicle ignition. Locate the positive and negative terminals, clean them if oxidised, then attach the red clamp to the positive and the black to the negative, making sure the jaws bite firmly into the metal. Then connect the cable to the device, and when finishing, unplug the device side first. Permanent links call for a different installation, by a professional.
Technical specifications
- Brand: Wattstunde
- Conductor cross-section: 6mm²
- Length: 1.5 m
- Type: battery clamps with cable
Safety
Never let the two clamps touch while they are connected to a source: the short circuit causes sparks and overheating. Avoid working near flames or sparks, since a battery can release flammable gases; ventilate the area. Wear gloves and goggles if the battery is old or damaged. Respect polarity and the current limit in the manual.
Care and storage
After use, wipe the jaws with a dry cloth and remove traces of corrosion with a soft brush. Coil the cable without tight bends and store the clamps insulated from each other, in a dry, temperate place.
