A pocket-sized lead for close-up connections
At 12 cm, this Goal Zero cable is not meant to cross a room. Its job is to join two items placed right against each other: for example a power station or battery with a USB output and a device with a USB-C input. Where a one-metre lead would form a bulky loop, this format avoids tangles and keeps the whole setup compact.
Where it earns its place
In a hiking pack
A battery tucked into the side pocket and a small device clipped right beside it: the link works without any cable dangling. It is just as handy on a dashboard or on the edge of a camp bed.
On site or in the workshop
Technicians who power a small instrument or a reader straight from an energy block sitting nearby appreciate having no surplus length to stow. For demonstrations at a show or on a stand, it keeps the arrangement tidy.
What the data tells us
The sheet names Goal Zero as the maker, gives a length of 12 cm and lists plastic as the material. It does not state the permissible power, the transfer speed or compatibility with any given model. Before buying, compare the connectors on your source and your device and consult the manufacturer’s instructions.
Getting started
- Identify the USB side and the USB-C side on your equipment.
- Insert each connector straight, without twisting.
- Place both devices steadily so the cable is not under tension.
Because the length is limited, avoid hanging a device from the cable: it is not designed to carry a load.
Strong points
- Minimal bulk thanks to its 12 cm length.
- Less loose cable, so fewer snags.
- Goal Zero brand identified on the data sheet.

Choosing such a short lead wisely
Before settling on this format, measure the real distance between your source’s output and the device’s input. If the two touch or sit a hand’s width apart, 12 cm is more than enough. If you need to move the device to handle it, a longer lead will be more comfortable and will avoid tugging on the ports. Also think about where the connectors sit: some housings put the output in a recess, which can get in the way of a rigid plastic plug. A dry run with both devices on the table will quickly tell you whether the geometry works before you set off on a trip.
Precautions
Respect the electrical limits printed on the source and the device. Do not force a connector that resists: check its orientation and make sure there is no dust in the port. Keep the cable away from water and heat, and replace it as soon as it shows a crack or unusual play in the socket.
Storage and cleaning
A cable this short does not coil: simply slip it into a pouch or a dedicated compartment, away from sharp objects. A dry cloth is enough to clean it; a slightly damp cotton swab can clear the connectors, provided they dry completely before use.
