The smallest SmartSolar: who is it for?
Equipping a caravan, a small boat, a trailer or a garden shed does not always call for a large device. The Victron Energy SmartSolar MPPT 75/15 is aimed squarely at such modest systems: it charges a 12 or 24 V battery with a current of 15 A, recognising the system voltage on its own. Its built-in Bluetooth allows communication with a compatible smartphone or tablet; the procedure is explained in the manufacturer’s manual.
Concrete examples
A weekend in a motorhome, a few LED lamps and a fan: the controller recharges the leisure battery while you enjoy the scenery. A craftsperson can use it for a roadworks signalling box; a site operator, to power a small remote sensor. The panels just need to stay below 220 W at 12 V or 440 W at 24 V.
What MPPT means here
MPPT technology continuously looks for the operating point at which the solar array delivers the most power, then converts that energy to the voltage the battery expects. The benefit is most noticeable when the modules have a higher voltage than the storage.
Design
The plastic housing measures 100 x 113 x 40 mm and weighs 500 g: it fits in the hand and can be screwed almost anywhere. Protection is dual: IP43 for the electronic components and IP22 for the connections. That remains insufficient for direct rain exposure, so a sheltered spot is a must. Self-consumption is 10 mA.
Installation step by step
- Pick a vertical, dry, accessible spot near the battery.
- Fix the unit, leaving space around it.
- Connect the battery as described in the manual, then the panels, without going over the 75 V input.
- Pair the Bluetooth with your mobile device and watch the first cycles.
A connection to a household network is a job for a qualified installer.
Strengths
- Tiny format, only 500 g.
- Automatic choice between 12 V and 24 V.
- Built-in Bluetooth, no extra module.
- Dual protection rating depending on the area of the device.

Precautions and storage
Avoid covering the housing and do not install it near a heat source. Use cables with a cross-section suited to 15 A and re-tighten the terminals after the first days of use. A dry cloth is enough for cleaning. For long-term storage, unplug the cables and keep the unit away from humidity. Before buying, compare the figures above with those of your panels and your battery: if one of them exceeds the stated limits, a different model would be a safer choice. The built-in Bluetooth is a convenience for monitoring, not a substitute for a regular visual check of cables, fuses and mounting once or twice a season.
