When to move up to a 22 A regulator
The more panels you add, the more current has to pass through the regulator. The SUNBEAMSystem MoonRay 320 is the 22 A version of the series: it accepts a nominal PV power of 320 W on a 12 V battery, or 640 W on a 24 V battery. Its name also refers to shade optimisation (Shadow Optimized) and a WeatherMax build.
Use cases
More ambitious mobile setups
A motorhome with a compressor fridge, a computer and lighting consumes enough to justify several panels. This regulator leaves headroom compared with an 11 A model, provided you stay within the stated limits.
Remote sites and professional use
A site cabin, a mountain refuge or a relay station powered at 24 V can rely on the 640 W capacity. Technicians like that a single device covers both battery voltages, which simplifies the handling of spare parts.
What the size and material tell you
The plastic housing measures 220 x 154 x 52 mm and weighs 1.1 kg. That is bulkier than the MoonRay 160, so it needs a little more room for mounting and airflow. The IP 33 rating calls for a sheltered location rather than a wall facing the weather. Self-consumption stays below 12 mA.
Installation steps
- Find a flat, sturdy support away from any heat source.
- Leave free space around the housing for air circulation.
- Connect the battery first, then the panel string, respecting polarity.
- Make sure the string voltage remains below the 45 V input.
Size the cables for a current of 22 A and have the whole system checked by a qualified installer if you are unsure about the protection devices to fit.
Advantages to remember
- Double the capacity of an 11 A regulator from the same series.
- Two battery voltages supported: 12 V and 24 V.
- Low self-consumption.

Safety instructions
At 22 A, an undersized cable heats up quickly. Choose a generous cross-section, tighten every terminal firmly and fit the protection devices the manufacturer recommends on each link. Never exceed the input voltage and never connect the panels before the battery.
Routine upkeep
An occasional visual check is enough: tight terminals, intact cables, no sign of overheating. Dust the housing with a dry cloth and store it somewhere dry if you remove it for the winter. Keep a note of the wiring layout so that any later inspection goes quickly and nothing is reconnected the wrong way round.
