Sizing an MPPT controller
An MPPT controller matches the panel voltage to the battery voltage, which benefits panels wired in series. Three values matter: the battery voltage, the maximum charge current in amps and the maximum input voltage accepted on the panel side.
Add up your panels’ power, compare it with the controller’s capacity and keep a margin. Several Victron SmartSolar models offer Bluetooth to follow charging on your smartphone. If you are equipping an installation, the simulator page can help estimate your needs. An undersized controller limits production, while an oversized one costs more with no immediate benefit. Read each product page carefully, because input limits differ from one model to the next. Returns are free within 30 days and the 2-year legal warranty applies.
